Is the Black race the plantation Negroes of the 21st century? Have Blacks been Jim Crowed into a purgatory world where they are neither free nor enslaved and where the landscape looks remarkably like the old plantation? "In the year 1886, Henry Grady, an editor of the Atlanta Constitution, had spoken at a dinner in New York. In the audience were J. P. Morgan, H. M. Flagler (an associate of Rockefeller), Russell Sage, and Charles Tiffany. His talk was called "The New South" and his theme was: Let bygones be bygones; let us have a new era of peace and prosperity; the Negro was a prosperous laboring class; he had the fullest protection of the laws and the friendship of the southern people. Grady joked about the northerners who had sold slaves to the South, and said the South could now handle its own race problem.

In the Trump era of governance, that coldness in the air the former slaves experienced soon after slavery--when Southern and Northern Elites letting bygones be bygones decreed that the sub-human Negro would forever be the sub-human he was meant to be--that chilliness, in the air, has suddenly returned; and if one listens closely, the twanging banjo sound of Dixie can very faintly be heard, drifting, alluringly, in the background.
