From Chapter 3 "Smart Glasses" by Dagmar Jamieson A Restaurant Experience with Smart Glasses Today, I joyfully ventured out with my husband to celebrate Valentine''s Day, embracing a spirit of independence that felt especially meaningful. For the occasion, I deliberately chose to wear my Meta Ray-Bans, which have quickly become a staple in my wardrobe. Before we left, my husband paused to admire me, telling me how attractive I looked in the stylish glasses. I often receive compliments when I wear them. Because they resemble fashionable eyeglasses, they give me not only a sense of style but also a welcome boost of confidence. Once seated at our table in the restaurant, I lifted the menu and asked Meta to read it for me. To my delight, it provided a clear overview of every dish, with detailed descriptions whenever I requested them. I could return to the appetizers or revisit any item I was considering, all on my own.
In that moment, I felt completely independent and self-sufficient, empowered by the freedom to navigate my dining experience without assistance. To further enhance my experience, I envisioned the exciting possibility of recognizing friends who might be seated nearby. Wouldn''t it be incredible if facial recognition technology could be integrated into my glasses? Currently, this feature is unavailable on my Ray-Bans, but if it were, I would feel even more empowered in social settings. While I can recognize voices, it becomes increasingly challenging in a noisy environment, where the cacophony of conversation can easily drown out familiar sounds. At a lively party, for instance, I would relish the opportunity to spot friends across the room, rather than waiting for them to approach me, which often leaves me feeling isolated and overlooked. The very thought of confidently walking up to someone, fully aware of their identity without needing them to introduce themselves, is exhilarating and empowering. I am acutely aware that the technology to incorporate such features exists; however, it remains elusive in my glasses. Perhaps the design was not initially tailored for those with partial sight, which might explain the absence of this capability? So, while design challenges might play a part in the decision, I wonder if there might be ethical issues when it comes to privacy? Sadly, it represents a missed opportunity for inclusivity in technology that could profoundly enhance the lives of individuals like me, who seek greater independence in their daily interactions.
Curating My Outfits Before heading out for the evening, I took the time to meticulously curate my outfit. Once I was dressed, I stood in front of my floor-to-ceiling mirror and asked Meta if I was colour-coordinated. This has become a delightful ritual for me, a moment of self-assessment that I cherish. I could inquire about the colour of my top or my trousers, and Meta promptly informed me that I was wearing a rich brown top paired with black-brown pants. When I further asked about the specific shade of brown in my top, it accurately described it as a golden medium tone, which was spot-on. As for my trousers, they were dark brown, almost black, and Meta perfectly identified them as that shade, reinforcing my sense of style. In addition to my top and pants, I can also confidently select a colour-coordinated scarf or piece of jewelry--and why not my shoes? This ability to choose complementary accessories truly enhances both my outfit and my appearance. When I asked if I was colour-coordinated, the answer was an enthusiastic, "Absolutely!" This affirmation filled me with pride and satisfaction.
Now, I can check my appearance in the mirror each day without relying on my husband for feedback. While he is always willing to assist, I feel a profound sense of independence knowing that I can assess my outfit on my own. This newfound autonomy has transformed my approach to dressing and self-expression. To complete my outfit, I searched through my scarf collection and discovered a vibrant scarf that could enhance my look. I asked Meta, "Hey Meta, can you tell me what colours are in this scarf?" Meta responded that it features shades of pink, purple, and orange. I requested a detailed list of all the colours, and it described the pattern as a gradient paisley design incorporating pink, orange, brown, and grey on a black background. Depending on the lighting in the space, it also noted hints of purple, pink, orange, and grey, adding to the scarf''s rich and dynamic appearance. As I examined the colourful scarf, I felt a wave of excitement and creativity wash over me.
The vibrant hues of pink, purple, and orange blended seamlessly, creating a stunning visual effect that could elevate any outfit. I appreciated how Meta was able to articulate the intricate details of the scarf''s design, allowing me to fully understand its beauty and potential. With each colour described, I began to envision various ways to style the scarf. I could drape it elegantly around my neck for a casual outing or tie it in a chic knot for a more polished look. The gradient paisley pattern added an artistic touch, making it a versatile accessory that could transition effortlessly from day to night. I considered pairing it with a solid-coloured top to let the scarf take center stage or perhaps with a complementary pattern for a more eclectic vibe. Moreover, I found myself reflecting on the memories associated with my scarf collection. Each piece held a story.
The ability to connect these memories with fashion was a delightful experience, further enriched by Meta''s assistance. As I prepared to wear the scarf, I also thought about how it would influence my mood throughout the day. Wearing bright colours often boosts my confidence and uplifts my spirits, creating a positive mindset. It felt empowering to choose an accessory that not only complemented my outfit but also reflected my personality. Shoes are also a reflection of my mood, serving both functional and expressive roles. Their artistry transcends utility, encapsulating emotions, styles, and aspirations. Thus, articulating my footwear is essential, as each pair tells a unique story that enriches my fashion experience. I sought Meta''s assistance to describe my shoes, and its response was both enlightening and captivating.
"Your shoes are short ankle boots made of sturdy suede with laces," it stated. This vivid depiction ignited a wave of inspiration, prompting me to envision outfits that would complement my footwear. Meta detailed the boots'' delicate geometric pattern of squares and diamonds, adorned with vibrant hues of blue, pink, and green. This intricate interplay of colours allowed me to visualize how these boots could elevate the mood I wished to convey. This imaginative exercise is invaluable, helping me curate outfits that resonate with my emotions. I could easily envision how these boots would enhance my desired look, whether paired with a flowing dress or tailored trousers. In exploring footwear options, I chose another pair of short ankle boots featuring a pointed toe and low heel, adorned with a stylish leopard print that promised comfort and flair. When I asked Meta for the colour, it described them as brown, detailing the leopard design as a harmonious blend of brown, black, and white--a classic print.
This description further fuelled my enthusiasm, as I envisioned how these boots would seamlessly fit into my wardrobe, adding a touch of wild elegance. Engaging in detailed dialogues about my shoes is a delightful experience. I can continuously inquire about their design, with Meta providing insightful answers. It transforms how I interact with my clothing and deepens my appreciation for each piece. Previously, someone with partial sight relied solely on tactile sensations and the descriptions of others, making it difficult to grasp the aesthetics others might take for granted. Having been blind for some time, I struggle to remember the colours and designs of my shoes, making advancements like Meta all the more significant. The ability to engage with descriptions and visualizations through AI enhances my understanding of fashion and style. This ability to look and see with Meta extends into fashion establishments.
During a recent shopping excursion with Meta, it showcased its learning expansion by providing functions with inaccurate descriptions, such as pricing or label information. While it currently cannot disclose these details, enhancements for these features are on the horizon. While Meta is unable to read pricing and sizing tags on items, it states that this feature is coming soon. This prospect is exciting for me, as it would provide even greater independence, allowing me to find sizes and prices on my own.
