Moritz Gottlieb Saphir : Nineteenth-Century Pioneer of Journalism and Food Writing
In the 19th-century, Saphir's fame in several European countriesfor example in Austria, Germany, and Francewas comparable to that of his friends Heinrich Heine and Ludwig Börne. He was a pioneer in Austria of modern journalism and one of its new genres, the feuilleton. He founded Der Humorist, the most significant modern Austrian newspaper of the period preceding the 1848 revolution. In addition, he was the first person to publish a study of traditional Ashkenazi Jewish cuisine, as well as the first newspaper reviews of a Jewish cookbook and a kosher restaurant.
