Couplet Pair Rebus The Principle of Cause and Effect in Art was developed from a multidimensional exhibition held at the university Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong in the winter of 2023-2024. The exhibition of more than 170 items, selected from the museum's permanent collection and loan objects from private collectors, is noteworthy for the diverse range of material, including traditional Chinese couplets, Neolithic grave goods and early bronzes, Chinese landscape and contemporary digital paintings, conceptual art, lenticular prints and interactive installations presented within the museum in four discrete arrangements. Artworks and artifacts were selected to examine the multiple facets of causality. One of the key aspects of the interaction between cause and effect-action and reaction-naturally relates to the concepts of equilibrium and harmony, which are universal principles in the art worlds of both East and West. This publication has been structured as a reflexive work that explores the interchange between curator, artist and visitor illuminating the ways in which eastern and western traditions present the ever-evolving state of cause and effect.
