Based on a collaborative project with an Asháninka and Nomatsigenga Native Community in Peru, Amasonic Futures follows the return of historical recordings and films and explores how once silenced Indigenous oratory, music, and dance are revived to advance cultural rights, Indigenous territorial autonomy, and rainforest conservation. By pursuing a decolonial anthropology of music approach, the book transcends the more conventional scheme in scholarship of limiting research on Amazonian verbal arts, music, and dance to one central ritual within the local context. Instead, it contextualizes the endeavors of Asháninka and Nomatsigenga peoples to reactivate their sonic and dance knowledge in Peru's present cultural policies and international advocacy for Amazonian Indigenous peoples. Amasonic Futures examines ethical and cultural property issues at the heart of current local, national, and international debates on Indigenous immaterial heritages archived in the North and Latin American metropolises: How can the legacies kept in diverse sound and audiovisual archives be restored to the originator communities, how can access, rights, and control over them be organized?.
