The ideal Victorian woman was supposed to keep the home fires burning but, with the outbreak of the American Civil War, women moved out of their domestic domains to help the Yankee cause. This text describes three women - Sophronia Bucklin, Annie Wittenmyer and Mary Walker - who dedicated themselves to their country.
