This reprint is usually designated as 1772 d, as it was preceded by three others in the same. Year. There exists, however, a manuscript in the poet's own handwriting (now in the possession of the Royal Library at Berlin), which in four instances offers a better text than the reprint, and which the editor has followed in the present edition. These cases are: (1) The ms. Reads non etwa' unberm, while the reprint has non etwa' anbern (of. P. 12, (2) the ms.

Has bie iungen Sente, the reprint hie junge Beute (of. P. 23, According to strict rule the adjective in the first case after etma' should be inected according to the strong declension, in the latter case after the definite article according to the weak declension. (3) While the ms. Contains the form verbirfit, the reprint has netherbt (cf. P. 26, l. 11) for which verbirbt is now commonly used.
