"The shutdown of the pulp mill means that Sam has to not only switch schools for ninth grade but also join a new rugby team. In a high/low format, this entry in the Sports Stories series uses short chapters packed with dialogue, action, and diverse characters to relate the Canadian teen's transition. Although self-conscious of his Walmart jeans and the tiny apartment he shares with his single mom, Sam can handle the affluent students' taunting. At odds, however, are the brotherhood spirit of rugby Sam has always embraced and the jealousy of one of his new teammates, Bittner. Tension mounts on and off the field as Sam and Bittner compete for the same flanker position, and winning the local championship cup is on the line. When the rivalry goes too far, a mediation meeting brings the teammates together for true sportsmanship. Rugby fans will most appreciate the in-depth descriptions of the hard physicality of the sport and its ideal muddy settings. Rugby objectives, terms, and player positions conclude this novel for reluctant readers and sports enthusiasts.
