His comprehensive history of modern conservatism, White Protestant Nation: The Rise of the American Conservative Movement, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Nonfiction.

His other notable works include The Case for Impeachment, which was cited by major media outlets as "the most important book of the year" upon its release, and The Embattled Vote in America, a sweeping history of voting rights. A tireless advocate for civil rights, Dr. Lichtman has served as an expert witness in over 75 civil rights and voting rights cases across the United States, lending his historical expertise to the defense of democratic institutions.
