Mares usually give birth to their foals at night under cover of darkness. I asked Truly if she would let me know when she was ready to deliver so I could set up a light and get a photo of her newborn.Truly did much better than that - on her own eighteenth birthday, in bright noonday sunshine, she brought baby Halley into the world.Truly's veterinarian looked at the photos and said, "We vets don't even get to see the foals born normally - horse owners call us when the mare is in trouble."Halley's birth illustrates a natural birth, through labor and delivery to baby's first steps and finding her first drink of mama milk. Horse owners can see what a normal birth looks like and be better prepared to care for their own mare's delivery.
