Chaplain (MAJOR) James F. Linzey, USA (Ret.), is the only living author of both an official institutional military prayer (the United States Army Cadet Command Prayer) and a military hymn (The United States Space Force Hymn, "Creator of the Universe"). Over a twenty-four-year military career, he served as a chaplain in both the United States Air Force and the United States Army. His Air Force career included serving as Acting Wing Chaplain at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California; a United States Air Force-wide nomination for "Best IMA Reservist of the Year" in 1992; and an assignment with Air Force Space Command, which later became the United States Space Force. His service included two tours as chaplain for the Officer Candidate School, Army National Guard Western Region (Fort Meade, South Dakota), and as Command Chaplain for the 5035th Garrison Support Unit during Operation Iraqi Freedom II at Fort Bliss, Texas-home to the largest mobilization and demobilization mission in the continental United States. He also served as Command Chaplain for the Southwest Region of Operation Enduring Freedom II under the Department of Homeland Security, headquartered at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. In this capacity, he oversaw religious support for military personnel across twelve installations.
Uniquely for a chaplain, he also served as both Commander and later Executive Officer of the Rear Detachment, until they received orders to join the Main Element at White Sands Missile Range. Additionally, he served as the first full-time chaplain for the U.S. Army Cadet Command's Leader's Training Course (now Cadet Summer Training) at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Beyond uniformed service, he has held several distinguished appointments, including State Chaplain for the Reserve Officers Association (Department of California), where he pastored more than 1,200 military officers and their spouses; State Chaplain for the California Military Officers Association of America; and Chief of Chaplains for the United States National Defense Corps-holding the rank of Colonel. A prolific writer, Linzey is the chief editor of the Modern English Version Bible and the author of numerous books and articles.
