Poetry stimulates the mind differently than other forms of writing with its rythm and word play. Poetry allows many people to read or hear each verse and feel and experience something different. This makes poetry great because it allows people to experience the struggles, triumphs, love, and spirituality of others in ways that transcends the normal fact based approach that touches the rational mind and engages the emotions where understanding and empathy truly come from.
