The Way Home collects a number of prose texts by veteran experimentalist Harry Mathews. Like the fiction of Italo Calvino and Georges Perec, his friends and colleagues in the literary group OULIPO, Mathews's work varies wildly in form, tone, and emotional effect. "Country Cooking" takes the shape of a recipe, but perhaps the longest and most entertaining one in literature; "The Orchard" is Mathews's personal memorial to his close friend Perec; and "Armenian Papers" is a series of prose poems set against an imaginary landscape at war. Also included is the author's autobiography. Previously published in the U.K., this collection has been expanded for its first U.S.
publication.
