Being a longtime hockey fan and a reader of hockey romance, I decided a few years ago to create a fictional Chicago hockey team, the Chicago Seabirds, named not for our omnipresent gulls, but for a shipwreck on Lake Michigan in 1868. Built in 1859, The Seabird was a wooden sidewheel steamboat that plied routes first from Michigan to Ohio, and later from Lake Superior to Chicago. On a trip from Manitowoc to Chicago, the combined cargo and passenger ship caught fire off Waukegan in the early morning of April 9, 1868. Only two people survived. At least 100 others, men, women, and children, burned to death or drowned in the icy waters. The founder of the franchise chose the name as a descendent of two of the victims. He decided that a memorial was in order and also thought it was an excellent name for the team. These stories all appeared in short-run anthologies, and I am happy to make them available to lovers of hockey romance.
