Joanne lives in a Society where children have their DNA tweaked to meet the future needs of Society. At a graduation ceremony they are given a coloured jacket which will denote the role they will have for the rest of their lives. She has been working with her botanist grandfather, and together they have discovered a breakthrough that will help all of Society. Joanne goes to the graduation ceremony ready to be given a green botanist jacket, like her grandfather, and announce what they have found. She's offered a blue jacket, the jacket of a space pilot. It is an honour that very few students are given. She has a choice to make. For the first time in the history of the Society she takes the green jacket and defies her pre-destined future.
