I prayed that before my eighteenth birthday I'd lose my virginity. I pictured myself in a variety of freak accidents (skateboarding, bagel cutting, or getting my hair caught in a rollercoaster), dying right before I had the chance to know what it was like. All I wanted was to be able to check the "Are you sexually active?" box at my doctor's office. After four years at the University of Florida I finally did get to check that box, along with many other things I wasn't entirely prepared for in college; like falling in love in the communal laundry room, getting dumped at a Motel 6, hooking up with random guys, and being so depressed I dropped two pants sizes. Joy in Solitude is a book about finding an identity in a sea of boys that don't fit as my life jacket. It's all about falling in love once with innocence and then again with trepidation. It's about breaking through a cocoon of depression in order to face the real world. It's about cooking something else besides ramen noodles.

Basically it's about living life as a college student and coming into your own.
