Originally published in 1667, John Milton's epic poem is renowned for its existential examination of the origins of humanity and its daringness to question God and humanize Satan, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics Line. Written when Milton was in his fifties and disillusioned by the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy in England, Paradise Lost 's ambivalence towards authority and stance on Christianity is highly debated. Milton's literary masterpiece centers the story of Adam and Eve's expulsion from Eden, yet sprawls into a vast, epic, and often grotesque poem that spans dramatically across time and space.
