Author Clement Clarke Moore (1770-1863) was a professor of literature and a poet. On Christmas Eve, 1822, he first recited '''Twas the Night Before Christmas'' (originally entitled ''A Visit from St. Nicholas'') at a holiday party at his New York City home He penned the poem as a Christmas gift for his six children. The poem was published anonymously in a newspaper the following year, and publicly attributed to Moore by 1837. The poem captured the imagination of the public, helped shape the modern image of Santa Claus, and became a beloved holiday classic.
