The author wrote for the Montgomery News Messenger 1982-1986. His weekly columns featured southwest Virginia historical research and archival material. He was the founder of the Richard Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Art Center. This volume brings together all his articles, additional material related to the founding years for the physical museum, Nicolay's research on the Shufflebarger log house, a one-act play on the death of Charles T. Edie at Hampden Sydney College, 1857, research into black oral history and the town of Wake Forest, Virginia, and a longer essay on Reconstruction in Southwest Virginia.
