Reach every student with Modified Mastering Engineering Mastering(tm) is the teaching and learning platform that empowers you to reach every student. By combining trusted author content with digital tools developed to engage students and emulate the office-hour experience, Mastering personalizes learning and often improves results for each student. Tutorial exercises and author-created tutorial videos walk students through how to solve a problem, consistent with the author''s voice and approach from the book. Learn more about Mastering Engineering. Help students apply theory and/or research with an integrated, case-based approach An integrated, case-based approach ties topics together via case studies, rather than present a string of disparate topics. The integrated approach presents the content in two parts with the first part presenting the fundamentals and the second part presenting treatments of specific, common design elements as examples of applying theory. A series of ten case studies provide a series of machine design projects throughout the book that contain various combinations of design elements. The case studies present realistic design problems and touch on different aspects of the same problem in successive chapters, allowing students to see the interrelationships and rationales for design decisions as well as the effect on individual elements.
Engage students with interactive, digital resources Twenty-one Master Lecture videos are taken from the author''s live lecture classes at WPI and allow students to watch, review, and enhance their understanding of the book''s topics from most chapters. Available in Mastering Engineering. Eight short videos feature the author demonstrating various principles of stress analysis and show examples of common machine parts such as springs, gears, and bearings. Available in Mastering Engineering. Six videos show real machinery in operation are also provided in Mastering Engineering. All of the 37 videos can be accessed through the Pearson eText in Mastering and are marked in the print version as well with their URLs provided, and they can be downloaded by print-book users. A Video Table of Contents is provided, and all other downloadable items are listed in the Downloads Index. The author-written programs that come with the book are revised to improve their interface and usability and are now compatible with the latest operating systems and computers.
Programs Linkages and Dynacam are completely rewritten and improved. Program Matrix is updated. These computer programs undergo frequent revision to add features and enhancements. Once installed, the programs can be updated from the Start Menu. Users should occasionally check for updates. Provide problem-solving practice for students NEW! Over 80 problems are added with many being in SI units. A total of 967 problems sets are provided withthe majority designed to be independent within a chapter and the remaining sets designed to build upon succeeding chapters. Methods and techniques that take full advantage of computer-aided analysis are presented.
The text is independent of any particular computer program. Computer files for the solution of all the examples and case studies written in several different languages (Mathcad, MATLAB, Excel, and TK Solver) are available for download from the Mastering Study Area. Several other programs written by the author are also provided as executable files. These include a Mohr''s circle generator (MOHR.exe), dynamic surface stress calculator (CONTACT.exe), matrix solver (MATRIX.exe) and several linkage and cam design programs. A number of author-written programs for kinematic, dynamic, and stress analysis are also included.
Provide instructor and student support Solidworks models with FEA solutions to several of the case studies are provided. Solidworks models of many assigned problems'' geometry are provided to expedite FEA solutions of those problems at the instructor''s option. The Instructor Solutions Manual as well as the PowerPoint slides of all figures and tables in the text are available to download from the Instructor Resources area of Mastering Engineering. Reach every student with Modified Mastering Teach your course your way: Your course is unique. So whether you''d like to build your own auto-graded assignments, foster student engagement during class, or give students anytime, anywhere access, Mastering gives you the flexibility to easily create your course to fit your needs. With Learning Catalytics , you''ll hear from every student when it matters most. You pose a variety of questions that help students recall ideas, apply concepts, and develop critical-thinking skills. Your students respond using their own smartphones, tablets, or laptops.
You can monitor responses with real-time analytics and find out what your students do -- and don''t -- understand. Then, you can adjust your teaching accordingly, and even facilitate peer-to-peer learning, helping students stay motivated and engaged. Learning Outcomes Summaries track student- or class-level performance for both publisher- and instructor-provided learning outcomes. All assignable Mastering Engineering content has been tagged to ABET Learning Outcomes A, E & K. Mastering also enables instructors to add their own learning outcomes and associate those with Mastering Engineering content. Empower each learner: Each student learns at a different pace. Personalized learning, including adaptive tools and wrong-answer feedback, pinpoints the precise areas where each student needs practice and gives all students the support they need -- when and where they need it -- to be successful. Algorithmic practice problems use the same scenarios as the book''s homework problems.
Pearson eText is a simple-to-use, mobile-optimized, personalized reading experience available within Mastering Engineering. It lets students highlight, take notes, and review key vocabulary all in one place -- even when offline. Seamlessly integrated videos and other rich media engage students and give them access to the help they need, when they need it. Educators can easily customize the table of contents and share their own notes with students so they see the connection between their eText and what they learn in class. Mastering Engineering tutorial homework problems are designed to emulate the instructor''s office-hour environment. Tutorials guide students through engineering concepts in multi-step problems that provide feedback specific to their errors, along with optional hints for breaking down the problems into smaller steps. Wrong-answer feedback, personalized for each student, responds to a wide variety of common wrong answers with immediate feedback specific to their error. Optional Hints provide two types of hints.
Declarative hints give advice on how to approach the problem, while Socratic hints break down a problem into smaller sub-problems. Homework problems support the problem-solving techniques in the text. Answer entry, beyond numerical input, includes: Plotting Mohr''s Circle for a Specific Element Identifying Key Points on Stress/Strain Curve Plotting the Shear and Bending Moment Diagrams for a Beam Adaptive Follow-Up Assignments are based on each student''s past performance on his/her course work to date, including homework, tests, and quizzes. These provide additional coaching and targeted practice as needed, so students can master the material. Deliver trusted content: We partner with highly respected authors to develop interactive content and course-specific resources that keep students on track and engaged. NEW!
