"As a Christian and a Southern girl who attended an HBCU and was active in the civil rights marches in the '60s, I could personally relate to many of the stories written here. More importantly, as a Southern girl, I love peach cobbler. As I read these 40 devotions that "tell the story," this experience reminded me of the joy I get when I devour a great peach cobbler. First is the top crust which is the Scripture, a foretaste of what is to come. Then the peaches comprise the filling just as the stories provide the sweet historical content either about a pivotal event in Black history or about a Black person who challenged the system to provide a great and lasting impact on society. At the bottom of all that sweetness is the bottom crust, the best part, which are the passages of Scripture that provide a deeper and relevant Word from the Lord. These 40 devotions are beautifully written and can be read at any time, but especially during Black History Month. It is a great way to learn about history and how that history relates to our lives, as well as a way to spend time with the Lord.
