In this book David Lloyd Owen explores ways of making clean water achievable throughout the world's urban populations, and, what is more, affordable. In 1991 the author left his job as an equity analyst, covering water and waste management companies for an investment bank, to set up an environmental brokerage. Whilst staying in the city of Leh in Ladakh in the Himalayas he became violently ill after drinking tap water, despite having used sterilising tablets. There is little doubt that that experience was the motivation behind Lloyd Owen's continuing research and analysis of the world-wide problem of clean water for all. He writes of political issues being one of the major obstacles facing water management. Sewage is a prime factor in water contamination. Lloyd Owen explores this worldwide problem in detail; he is a man with a vision. It is not the easiest read, but I believe the author, with his personal touches added to the data, has managed to open a less scholarly approach than many who have written on this subject before him.

Clean water for all is essential to living and the scarcity of it is not something any of us can afford to ignore. Lloyd Owen summarises: 'I believe that politician's chief purpose ought to be promoting human happiness, which is probably why I stick to policy rather than politics these days. If this book can encourage people outside the business of water and waste water to take its management more seriously, then its purpose will have been served.'
