In a campaign know for many special warfare units, the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) became one of the greatest legends of the North African Campaign in World War II. Equipped with specially modified light trucks, the British, New Zealand, and Rhodesian troops of the LRDG roamed far behind German lines on a variety of dangerous missions.Although they sometimes engaged in combat directly, most LRDG missions were reconnaissance or guiding other special units, such as the Special Air Service, across the desert. Royal Naval officers had trained LRDG men to navigate by the stars, so the trackless desert was little impediment to their operations. By war's end LRDG operations had shifted to Italy and the Mediterranean, and the unit had played a prime role in establishing Britain's reputation for special forces operations. This classic insider's account of the LRDG has been updated and supplemented with new photographs to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the LRDG in June 2000.
