Taking the European Union Seriously explores the current juridical status of the European Union and addresses a number of assumptions about its constitutional status which the author claims to be mythological. He argues that, despite appearances, the Union is not a state and engages with major questions of democratic theory and political philosophy surrounding the so-called 'democratic deficit' in decision-making within the EU and whether the neo-liberal economic model is now in the ascendant as the predominant political philosophy in Europe. The book is an argument against Europhobia based on healthy scepticism regarding Europe's current constitutional moment.
