What is the nature of militancy in the labour movement in Quebec? What role does the CNTU play in the new radicalism? How did it develop from its Catholic origins into a mass trade union movement? All of these questions and more are examined in this work, which was originally published in 1972 amidst one of the worst economic crises in Quebec since the Great Depression. In 1971, the CNTU quickly radicalized, and began to advocate for socialism and the workers' control of the economy. This bold political stance placed the CNTU in a unique position within the wider trade union movement.
