Orphaned at age 5, Danny Dare, a city dwelling boy, withdrew from the world. Aged 11, with tousled brown hair, green eyes and long gangly legs, he now lives with his Grandparents in a rambling old country mansion called Downe Hall. Set amongst green lawns, tall hedges, wide flower beds, fishponds and bluebell-covered woods, it opens for Danny a world of adventure - trees to climb, camps to build, new friends and cool clear streams to splash in. One rainy October day, whilst recovering from flu, Danny explores his Grandfather's old shed. It's a dusty, dark shed full of oil cans, strange-looking tools, wooden boxes, cobwebs and rows and rows of old engine parts carefully labeled and placed on wooden shelves around its walls. A large, now somewhat rusty, white and red enamel sign nailed to the wall reads: 'Café Racer 63'. Underneath a dusty canvas sheet, buried beneath a mountain of cardboard boxes full of old newspapers, Danny discovers a vintage Norton motorcycle. As he climbs aboard to play, he discovers a new channel for his imagination - but when he throttles back and changes gear, something magical happens; Danny finds himself four years older and transported through a secret portal - back to the year 1963.

It's a world he knows nothing about; it's a world full of strange-looking people; it's a world of brand new adventures.As Danny rides through the streets of East London on his motorbike, he finds himself thrust into an adventure when he daringly rescues, from the clutches of her brutal stepfather, a young girl called Sally Pickles. After being chased through the busy streets and sinister back alleyways of East London, Danny manages to escape, thanks to his strange motorcycle. Safe, the two become best friends and Danny learns about the time he now finds himself in - it's a time of rock n roll, motorcycle gangs and romance. But when Danny discovers that Sally's stepfather - Tommy Flynn - is a notorious bank robber, planning a robbery, and that Sally is being forced to help him or her mother will be hurt, Danny vows to help her. Before he can, he finds himself transported back to the dusty bike shed. He must somehow find away to return through the portal to help her.Every day after school Danny visits the shed and tries to re-enter the portal, nothing seems to work.

Worried and frustrated, Danny reads one of the many old newspapers his Grandfather has stored. To his surprise, he reads of a daring bank robbery, in which a young girl, Sally Pickles, was tragically injured and died. In desperation, he hops aboard the magical bike, throttles back, kicks a gear and finds himself back in 1963. Is he in time to help and save his friend, and what adventure awaits him?.
