Katherine Pryor has an MA in environment & community, with a focus in local & sustainable food systems. Katherine is the author of Bea's Bees (9780764356995; "important contribution to the understanding and conservation of bees." --SLJ) and Hello, Garden! (9780764361098; IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Award Winner; "Just right for little gardeners." --Kirkus Reviews) She is a regular speaker on childhood nutrition and healthy eating and has been awarded multiple grants to collaborate with regional farmers markets and schools to do large-scale book giveaways. She has long been an advocate of supporting local farms as a way of preserving regional farmland, and because of the enhanced flavor and diversity local food provides. The reader will gain an understanding of how local foods change with the seasons, as well as an appreciation for the diversity of foods available at regional farmers markets. There are currently very few picture books detailing produce seasonality in a fun and accessible way, and we hope to get kids excited about trying new foods throughout the year. It relates to STEAM by showing how food grows as well as what conditions are necessary for different foods to grow.

Author note: I want to help get kids excited about eating fresh, whole foods from the earliest possible age. I want to offer farmers markets another tool to get people excited about visiting a market and supporting local farmers. I want to help kids understand that just because a food might be visible in the grocery store all year long doesn't mean that those foods grow all year near their home. I want to make healthful eating fun and showcase just how delicious fruits and vegetables can be.
