Attached to the Federal XI Corps, the "Sigel Regiment" received its baptism of fire at Chancellorsville, where 33 percent of the regiment fell killed or wounded before Stonewall Jackson's devastating attack. After suffering heavy losses at Gettsyburg, the 26th transferred west, where it served in virtually every major engagement from the Wauhatchie through the Atlanta Campaign. Sherman's March to the Sea, the Carolinas Campaign, and the Grand Review in Washington, D.C., ended its service. Recognized by the Secretary of War as "one of the finest military organizations in the service", the 26th Wisconsin finally receives its due in Pula's deeply researched and gracefully written study.
