Jim Quinn is the author of American Tongue and Cheek , an attack on language purists of the Right and supposed Left; Word of Mouth , a radical restaurant guide to Manhattan; The Campaign Alice , a satire about the 1972 Presidential election (reviewed by Screw Magazine which loved the illustrations and hated the politics, and by The Militant , organ of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers party, which loved the politics while deploring the sexism of the illustrations); and Never Eat Out on a Saturday Night , a book of restaurant secrets. He was co-founder of several Underground papers in the 1960s and 70s, all of them uncompromising, anticapitalist, antiwar and irredeemably doomed to fail. He was a staff reporter for the Washington Post , the Philadelphia Inquirer , and Philadelphia Magazine . He wrote "Cook Like a Man," a food column for Esquire , reviewed restaurants for Soho News (also doomed) and "Lingo," a language column for The Nation . His freelance journalism has appeared in places as disparate as The New York Times Sunday Magazine , Village Voice , Town and Country , Rolling Stone and In These Times , organ of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee of the USA. He now writes fiction, which has appeared in Western Humanities Review , the Manchester Review (UK) and Literary Imagination , a publication of Oxford University (UK). He now teaches not-quite-ready-for-remediable English at Philadelphia Community College and lives with the poet Daisy Fried, to whom he is married, and their daughter, Maisie, in South Philadelphia, USA, and area known for its huge outdoor market, its ethnic variety and in-your-face harmony.
