Baudelaire's Banned Poetry: The Censored, Erotic & Vampiric Illustrated Bilingual Edition Poems by Charles Baudelaire Edited and introduced, with transcreations and contemporary English translations, by Dante Remy In 1857 the French government banned six poems from Les Fleurs du Mal. The court praised their literary brilliance yet suppressed them for "offending public morality." These forbidden works fused raw pleasure with suffering, set exquisite cruelty beside beauty, joined erotic longing to total oblivion, allowed seduction to end in horror and metamorphic ruin, and treated female same-sex desire with unflinching sympathy. Their legal exile lasted until 1949. They never truly disappeared. This volume restores them-and goes further. For the first time, every poem appears in three distinct versions: Baudelaire's original French; a faithful modern English translation that preserves his music and meaning; and a bold contemporary "transcreation" by Dante Remy that enters the poem's structures and follows them into our century's desires, hypocrisies, and forbidden hungers. These are not polite modernizations.

They ask how to translate the scandal when old euphemisms no longer shock, and what happens when the body becomes geography, perfume becomes memory, and the beloved turns vampire, altar, or threshold. The book is richly illustrated with 80 erotic images drawn from two centuries of private, limited, and banned publications of Baudelaire's poetry-restored Symbolist and Decadent works by Félicien Rops and others that once haunted collectors' libraries: nude figures, skeletal lovers, jeweled bodies, and vampiric metamorphoses returned to the page. Three versions of every poem. Eighty erotic illustrations spanning 200 years. One book that refuses to look away. Readers will feel the same unsettled recognition Baudelaire's first audience knew: beauty and corruption, tenderness and violence, pleasure and death still share the same skin. Open it. The flowers of evil are still blooming.
