While this ancient Indian science has roots in Hindu mythology and doctrine, today it is mainstream, global and growing in popularity. In the United States, the number of yoga practitioners has increased to more than 36 million, up from 20.4 million in 2012, when I began this project. In China, it is growing 20% annually. For his first photography book, Richter has traveled to places that are historically relevant to yoga's past and others that embody its living present, working in a variety of traditions with many of the world's great saints and yogis. Through these photographs, he aims to connect contemporary forms to the traditions of yoga, and evoke the inner experience. Exhibitions: MPLS Photo Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 01.03.
