During real estate booms times, risks are overcome by ever improving market conditions. When boom times end, lenders get stuck with half finished projects and sell those projects to "work out" artists like Marcus Flint. Flint is a diabetic and dies suddenly at the opening of "The Apogee," a high end condo project in La Jolla. Bishop Bone is asked to write his memoirs and soon discovers that his death was no accident. That discovery almost gets Bone killed as powerful people don't want the truth revealed. Bone is in a race to find the killer before the killer ends his involvement.
