Erica García, a young Puerto Rican lesbian aide, works the third shift at a mental health facility in New England. She lives at night and sleeps through the day-much to her girlfriend's annoyance. At work, she changes bedpans, cleans rooms, helps patients, and listens to the crude manner that other aides talk about their charges. Erica tries not to think about the conditions where her mother lives. Living at Night is a clear-eyed account of the realities of daily lives for those living with disabilities in facilities in the 1970s. Based on the author's own experiences working at Mansfield Training Center, Living at Night is a literary lesbian novel that explores the material conditions around Erika as she learns how to take control of her life.
