Dane Rudhyar was a widely respected astrologer, highly influential in the 20th century. He was also a philosopher, poet, novelist, composer, painter and aesthetic theoretician. Born in Paris in 1895, he came to America late in 1916. The next year his musical compositions were performed in New York along with works by Erik Satie and other French composers in the first performance of dissonant polytonal music in America. He became interested in astrology in 1920 and combined this interest with studies of Eastern philosophies and, after 1930, the psychology of Carl Jung. His widely acclaimed book The Astrology of Personality was originally published in 1936 and reissued in paperback in 1970. Since 1933 Rudhyar wrote extensively for astrological publications and published more than a dozen books in which he has developed a "humanistic" approach to the ancient science.
