This branch was authorized by an act approved January 28, 1901, entitled "An act to establish a branch soldiers' home at or near Johnson City, Washington County, Tenn." It was opened for use October 15, 1903. (10) The Battle Mountain Sanitarium, at Hot Springs, S. Dak. This sanitarium was authorized by an act approved May 29, 1902, entitled "An act for the establishment, control, operation, and maintenance of a national sanitarium of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Hot Springs, in the State of SouthDakota." It was opened for use March 15, 1907. Second.


Acreage and cost of land, buildings, and permanent improvements at each branch of the home. (1) Central, at Dayton, Ohio: Citizens of Dayton, Ohio, contributed $20,000 as part payment for the land, which money was applied to general purposes. (3) Eastern, at Togus, Me.: The site and buildings of this branch were purchased for $50,000. Deducting estimated value of buildings, $40,000, leaves $10,000. (7) Marion, at Marion, Ind.: The land upon which this branch is located was purchased upon the condition that there should be sunk upon it a gas well that would give a sufficient supply of gas for the heating, cooking, and lighting purposes of the branch, as required by the law establishing the branch. Owing to the failure of the natural-gas supply in that territory this provision has become inoperative.
