Navtej Sarna is the author most recently of Indians at Herod's Gate, a historical travel narrative on India and Jerusalem. His works include the novels The Exile and We Weren't Lovers Like That; the non-fiction works The Book of Nanak and Folk Tales of Poland; the short story collection Winter Evenings; and the translations Zafarnama and Savage Harvest. He has contributed regularly to Times Literary Supplement and several other journals. A member of the Indian Foreign Service since 1980, he has served as the Foreign Office spokesperson, India's ambassador to Israel and Secretary, Government of India. He has been appointed as India's High Commissioner to the UK.
