As Sigmund Freud and C. G. Jung heroically pioneered the foundation and practice of a psychology of the unconscious or depth psychology, their roots in and allegiance to modern rationalism kept them from seeing and giving expression to the full relativizing possibilities of their vision. As a result, practitioners of psychoanalysis have maintained a predominantly rational approach to the irrationality of unconscious life. This book articulates a vision of depth psychology, particularly Jungian psychology, that emphasizes a decentered perspective toward psychological life as articulated in such postmodern orientations as phenomenology, deconstruction, quantum physics, chaos theory, and aesthetics.
