When the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn miraculously escaped the clutches of the European onslaught and alighted on the shores of America in 1940, he immediately proclaimed that the main purpose of his coming to the U.S.A. was to spread the study of Torah and the observance of Mitzvos; to prove that "America is not different," and that it could be made into a citadel of Torah life and study. His first priority was Jewish education. He immediately began to organize a network of Jewish day schools in various parts of the country, which was the pioneering force of the Jewish day school system now existing in Jewish communities throughout the United States. His singular efforts in this field completely revolutionized Jewish education in America. As part of his concern for Jewish education, the Rebbe established a multi-lingual publishing house which publishes Jewish educational literature, as well as works of Chassidic Philosophy in many languages.
