Matthew has historically been one of the most beloved of the four Gospels because of its not-so-subtle connection to the Old Testament and the unique emphasis on fulfillment. In this volume, Patrick Schreiner argues Jesus's first words, that he should be baptized to "fulfill all righteousness" (3:15), encapsulates Matthew's themes. Both terms-fulfill and righteousness-are particularly important to Matthew and speak to Jesus's divine mission to do what his people could not. Jesus's baptism highlights how he will accomplish this, by undergoing death but rising from the dead. This mission elucidates the other themes of Matthew. The problem in the Gospel is that sin and unrighteousness have led to exile for Israel. The problem leads to the solution-the fulfillment of all righteousness, which is based on who Jesus is the Jewish Messiah and Son of God, and in what he accomplishes for his people. Jesus dies and rises, satisfies the law, creates a new community, and announces the arrival of the kingdom of heaven.
