This light-hearted, witty tale tells of the relationship between Miss Dolores Diver and Harry Gibson. They met at the Chelsea Arts Ball. For ten years, their bliss was complete until Mr Gibson decides to marry the spoilt daughter of a wealthy benefactor in order to save his ailing business. Miss Diver is cut off without a penny and is forced to take in a lodger, Mr Philips, who mistakenly takes Dolores for a much richer woman than she is.
