Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was an English writer best known for her groundbreaking novel Frankenstein, a work that helped shape modern science fiction while remaining deeply rooted in Romantic-era thought and emotion. She was born in London to two prominent intellectuals: philosopher William Godwin and writer Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Her mother died shortly after her birth, and Shelley grew up in an environment rich in literature, philosophy, and political discussion, which greatly influenced her thinking and writing. As a teenager, she formed a relationship with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, whom she later married. Together, they traveled through Europe and spent time among leading literary figures of the time, including Lord Byron. It was during a famous gathering in Switzerland in 1816 that Shelley conceived the idea for Frankenstein, inspired by conversations about science, life, and the limits of human knowledge. Published in 1818 when she was just twenty years old, Frankenstein established Shelley as a bold and original voice. Though often associated with the horror genre, her work is deeply philosophical, exploring themes of creation, responsibility, isolation, and the human condition.

In addition to Frankenstein, Shelley wrote several novels, short stories, and essays. After the death of her husband, she dedicated herself to preserving his literary legacy while continuing her own writing. Today, Mary Shelley is recognized as one of the most influential writers of her time, whose work continues to resonate across literature, science, and culture.
