In 1941 the pioneering folk group the Almanac Singers (Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, and Millard Lampell) made a cross-country tour to support labor unions and to demonstrate how the power of song can bring people together to stand up for their rights. In 2013 Rik Palieri and George Mann undertook a 9,200-mile tour to honor and recreate the Almanacs' journey and to reinvigorate that group's message of freedom. This book, the first to tell this story, follows these two musicians as they sing for working men and women across 15 states. It also recounts the history of the Almanac Singers in the politically charged days before America entered World War II. Along the way, Palieri and Mann not only performed their repertoire of historic and contemporary music but also underscored the continued relevance of the Almanac's rallying cry for all people to rise up against their oppressors. Included are historical contexts of the songs and the performers who promote and perpetuate them, among them Guthrie, Seeger, Sis Cunningham, and Utah Phillips, as well as such contemporary artists as Dom Flemons and Si Kahn.
