At one time Santa Rosa Creek Road had three one-room schools operating simultaneously within a nine-mile stretch-Santa Rosa, Mammoth Rock, and Mercury. The first two schools began operating during the 1860s. Mercury was only open from 1917 to 1921, closing due to the fluctuation of the labor force at Oceanic Mine.
