In 2025, 25% of students did not meet age-related expectations for reading in the KS2 SATs meaning they started secondary school at risk of not accessing the KS3 curriculum. There is a national focus on reading at the start of secondary school to ensure every young person can achieve and thrive. There will be a mandatory reading test for all children at age 13 in Year 8. Little Wandle Code has been designed specifically for the demands of the secondary school environment and has been developed with over 60 secondary schools through a three-year pilot.
