Frederick Meredith's story encompasses the first three decades of the NSW colony. As a First Fleeter (1788) and then one of the first group of Free Colonists (1793) Frederick Meredith is well known to early colonial history enthusiasts. Frederick Meredith lies in the Pioneer Cemetery in Liverpool, NSW, and his family knows him as an early farmer, constable, poundkeeper, and progenitor of a sprawling family which is knitted into the fabric of modern Australia. Yet these facts are just a gateway to a world of curious coincidence, questionable events, and a life that is at once solid and tangible and at the same time fantastic and hard to credit. Was Frederick Meredith; the first person convicted in NSW, was he wrecked in the Sirius off Norfolk Island, was he the First Chief Constable of Liverpool, the First Postmaster, or indeed was Frederick Meredith even his name?.
