The latest of Tristan's Stephenson's hugely successful The Curious Bartender books sees him taking a dive into the world of agave spirits. He embarks on an epic journey across six Mexican states, with photographer Addie Chinn in the back, and their translator, tequila go-to-guy and font of wisdom, Pancho, at the wheel. They start in the world-renowned Tequila Valley in the state of Jalisco, before heading east into the highland region of Los Altos. Then they explore another spectacular product of the agave plant, raicilla, before journeying into Michoacán and Oaxaca, to meet the maestros and maestras of mezcal. All in all, they travel to 38 of the most extraordinary agave spirits' producers in the world, from big-time tequila brands to smaller-scale artisans. Tristan discovers a landscape and culture like no other, learning how deep the roots of the agave run and stopping off at the tantalising tabernas, cocktail haunts and road-side taco shacks along the way. The final section sees Tristan's formidable mixology skills come into play, inspired by the tales and tequilas he's encountered on this road-trip of a lifetime.
