This is the first comprehensive publication devoted to Tomaacute;s Saacute;nchez, one of the most important and celebrated living Cuban artists. Saacute;nchez is a commanding realist, although his landscapes are imagined or dreamed. His work is meticulous in its breath-taking detail, but the objective of the artist is not so much the recreation of reality as it is the display of a magical realism. In this respect, Saacute;nchez is closer perhaps to Gabriel Garciacute;a Maacute;rquez than to the North American model of hyperrealism. This volume follows the development of Saacute;nchez's work chronologically from his early expressionist paintings to his most recent landscapes.
