A debut poetry collection by Kai Cheng Thom, a fiercely compelling trans Asian poet and performer whose work is a spellbinding mix of spoken word, Asian mythology, and queer punk. Kai Cheng was recommended to us by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, author of the acclaimed Dirty River. Kai Cheng has also performed with Arsenal authors Ivan Coyote and Amber Dawn. Her poetry is political, angry, and passionate; she is also a consummate spoken word performer (videos of her performances can be viewed on her website ladysintrayda.wordpress.com). The title of the book is a play on "No place like home." Here, there is no home, and no easy comfort forthcoming from family or mainstream society.
Instead, "No Homeland" is an imagined, fantastical place where "monstrous women" from mythology explore the meaning of sexuality and survival for trans women of color. In her own words: "I sometimes call these 'combat poems' and 'survival poems,' because I wrote most of them as way of coping with my own experiences of physical and sexual violence and psychological struggle as a young, Chinese trans woman. I wanted to create a reflection of myself and girls like me when I couldn't find one in the world.".
