When Donna's marriage breaks down, she takes on the position of a warden in a sheltered housing scheme with her two young teenage children. They miss their father and desperately try to re-unite their family. Donna's friend, Emily, lives close by with her young son and helps run the lunch club and other activities in the community room on the scheme, as well as befriending the lonely elderly residents. When their care and dedication is acknowledged and rewarded, they take a joint family holiday abroad where Emily makes a life-threatening discovery and Donna has to decide on a future with or without her husband when she can no longer cope with the torture of teenage turbulence. Donna's newly-appointed co-worker, instead of looking after those she is paid to care for, causes conflict and discord on the scheme with serious consequences for many. Donna is faced with a dilemma as she tries to protect the vulnerable residents as well as support her friend, as Emily faces her own demons and makes sacrifices that her boyfriend can't live with.
