Mike Vincent was a short story crime writer. To get the feel of this story he researched microfilm of old New York newspapers for background, went to New York, walked the trail of the story's ghost in Lower Manhattan, travelled out to Long Beach, Long Island, and tried to picture the scene that the story's final chapter depicts. The story's fiction based on fact. It's the story of the last ten days in a woman's life. It's a story of how that woman's childhood and adolescence were trapped in the vagaries of another's mind. Trapped, she'd never seen the watcher there, that stealthy corrupter whose fairystories were straight from Havelock Ellis. And she'd believed them because he'd said so. Because that wealthy man from Boston was married to a cousin of her mother.
And there was also her stepfather - and he too was watching and waiting. Only he was waiting for money.
